Escenario Manuel de Falla Auditorium
This is the first significant construction to be built within the Alhambra since the unfinished magnificence of the Palacio de Carlos V. In the year 1978, when the Auditorium was inaugurated, the architect García de Paredes wrote a report in which he said « this is the first significant construction to be built on this holy architectural site since 1537 when the Palacio de Carlos V emerged in the heart of the Alhambra. The task required as much tact as courage » Moreover, according to García de Paredes, he was faced with intellectual problems: « this instrument of culture must be erected as a tribute to Manuel de Falla, a great and modest man who lived very near this place during the most productive years of his creative life and who, above all else, had very clear ideas about the social role of art. Therefore, the architecture of the Centre [the Auditorium] which carries his name must in some way reflect his personality: an almost monastic austerity, a very large measure of conceptual perfection together the greatest economy of means».That is why he designed «a cluster of forms growing out of interior spaces, just like the Alhambra ». On the 30th anniversary of the Auditorium, the daughter of the prematurely deceased García de Paredes, Angela, who also runs her own architects studio, confirmed the intentions and the aspirations of her father when she wrote in 2008: «The Auditorium, that silent icon of our architectural heritage, has never ceased to contain all varieties of music in a unique and beautiful concert hall within which the space of sound is shaped and given body; it stands in all its conceptual rigour as the most heart-felt tribute from Granada to Manuel de Falla».
