Escenario Palacio de los Córdova
At the end of the Paseo de los Tristes, up river and leaving on our right the extraordinary sight of the Alhambra towers, the start of the paseo del Avellano and the romantic cuesta de los Chinos, we thus begin the climb up the so-called cuesta del Chapiz, which before was known as the Rabad al-Bayda (white quarter) and then the Alhacaba de Guadix. Virtually at the beginning of the hill, on the right hand side, we come across the Palacio de los Córdova, home to the city of Granada's historical archive. The building, accessed via some gardens and seed beds, was constructed here following the decision of the Duchess of Montellano and Grandee of Spain, Hilda Fernández de Córdoba, under the architect Álvarez de Toledo and with the collaboration of the collector and decorator Antonio Dalmases. It was built using the remains of the original palace, constructed in 1592 on sites close to the current Convento de Carmelitas Descalzas by Don Luis Fernández de Córdoba, Second Lieutenant of Granada and Knight Commander of Villanueva de la Fuente and his wife Francisca. It was they who decorated the building with a beautiful mannerist gateway, a wide balcony under an overhanging roof, its coats of arms, flags and lions, in addition to various inscriptions justifying the ornamentation "in memory of their predecessors and in favour of their descendents". The elegant courtyard includes lowered arches supported by twelve white marble columns with Italic capitals and arab-mudéjar cymas, splendid bowed roofs with richly painted honey-combed muquarnas, added to this new building, in addition to other pieces in marble and wood. Granada Council acquired the palace for the city, during Manuel Sola's time as mayor.
