Escenario The Teatro Alhambra
A multi-purpose theatre with a contemporary aim, even for the children who come to the shows here. Unlike the Isabel la Católica theatre, the Teatro Alhambra in the historical Realejo district was inaugurated in 1992 converted from a cinema which, in its heyday in the mid 70s, specialised in films known as «new wave». This building was rescued at the end of the 80s, after it had gone through a serious decline, thanks to the efforts and the insistence of a private theatre company, Teatro del Sur. They took on the renovation and converted the old cinema into a new theatre. In under four years all their efforts were rewarded when they received the Premio Andalucía de Teatro 1996 awarded by the Junta de Andalucía who the following year took on further renovation and the management of the theatre. Modernity in theatre, dance and music has always been the distinguishing feature of this theatre which, almost like a living being, was victim of a scare in 2005 when significant equipment shortages were detected. This led to its closure and subsequent refurbishment. Since the end of 2007 it has been a centre for Granada audiences seeking the type of production which is no longer called «new wave».
