Transfigured Night

After the impact of his presentation as artist in residence in 2021, Klaus Mäkelä returns to Granada for a double program with the Paris Orchestra, of which he has been the leading conductor since that same year. On the first of the two concerts they will perform two works that are very representative of their composers at the turn of the 20th century. Transfigured Night is an original work for string sextet that Arnold Schoenberg wrote in 1899 based on a poem of the same title by Richard Dehmel, a work of late romantic chromaticism that Schoenberg himself would end up taking to the orchestra in 1917. By the time the original version of Transfigured Night was premiered in 1902, Mahler had already released his Fourth Symphony, one of his most optimistic and light pieces, which culminates with a delicious lied written about a poem from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, sung on this occasion by the extraordinary German soprano Christiane Karg.
