From the music duet to the loving trio
The duets formed by violin and piano bring us back to the origins of chamber music. Mozart and Beethoven set out the guidelines for a long term tradition which was continued by composers such as Schumann, whose passionate Sonata Op. 105 was premiered by the violinist Ferdinand David and his wife, Clara, author of the exuberant Three Romances which were praised even by the virtuoso violinist Joseph Joachim. Brahms, friend of the couple and possibly her lover, displayed a refined harmonic vocabulary in his Scherzo (third part of the famous ‘F.A.E.’ Sonata) together with a stunning capacity to create densities and textures.
