New Classics

Granada welcomes for the first time one of the most solid European dance companies, the Slovenian National Ballet from the Opera in Ljubljana, directed by the veteran Italian choreographer Renato Zanella. Interested in Spanish creation, the centenarian dance company presents one of the latest stagings of Le Corsaire in the version of José Carlos Martínez, former director of the Spanish Compañía Nacional de Danza. Le Corsaire, never seen before at the Theatre of the Generalife Gardens is a love story with fairies and pirates, one of Petipa’s few complete ballets to survive and one of the least performed, perhaps due to its intricated argument, so rich in subplots. Martínez’s “traditional” version is focused on the love existing between Conrad and Medora, and he makes this new version more dynamic by shortening and clearing the ballet, but he does not eliminate the most famous and thrilling scenes, such as the Pas de deux which Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev made so popular.
