Around Shostakovich

Founded in the 1980s, the Mandelring Quartett debuts at the Festival with a program based on a composer who has been one of the bone of contention of their successful career (including their full discography), Dmitri Shostakovich. The Russian composer began writing quartets relatively late, but his fifteen works in the genre are an unavoidable reference for anyone. Among them, the Eighth is one of the best known and one of the most personal, since Shostakovich includes quotes from some of his previous works. In any case, the concert begins with the music of a young Dmitri, the one who wrote in 1927, just after finishing at the Conservatory, the ten modernist Aphorisms for piano, which will be played by Judith Jáuregui, from San Sebastián. The pianist and quartet will close the recital together in another crucial chamber music work by the Russian composer, the Quintet, an energetic and highly original work, written in five movements during troubled times (1940).
