On Preludes and Dreams

Spain’s National Youth Orchestra continues to be the depositary of the extraordinary work that is done with young musicians in all corners of the country. On this occasion, they are conducted by a true legend, the Israeli Eliahu Inbal, who at 87 years of age continues with a level of activity and in a prodigious state of form, as will be seen in a very demanding repertoire. The concert opens with one of the key works for the development of modernity, the Prelude to Tristan and Isolde, accompanied by the instrumental version of Liebestod, a masterful introduction to one of the most unique symphonies by Anton Bruckner, a fervent Wagnerian, the Seventh, whose luminous outburst had been inspired in a dream, as the composer would later confess. The work has the forceful architecture of his best works and includes an elegiac Adagio that is completely unforgettable.
