Chailly premieres at the Festival
One of the greatest conductors of the last half century had not yet participated in the Granada Festival. Riccardo Chailly comes with the Filarmonica della Scala of Milan, which, beyond being a mythical pit ensemble, is a supreme concert orchestra. To prove this, he will appear at the Carlos V with two substantial works about the end of it all. First, the Seventh, Prokofiev’s last symphony, written a year before his death and charged with a sweet nostalgic feeling that only breaks in the final Vivace with an energetic and vital coda added retrospectively and of which, according to his friend Rostropovich’s words, he later regretted, for which reason it is frequently omitted. And in the second part, the Pathétique, Tchaikovsky’s last and most popular symphony, which he himself premiered six days before his death, with that dramatic final Adagio that more than justifies its title.
